Nintendo revealed the game on Wednesday as part of a raft of new announcements at its Nintendo Direct online presentation, including more details about its new tactical role-playing game Fire Emblem: Three Houses, as well as the launch of Super Mario Maker 2 for Switch. In this new version, besides Tetris Primetime Tournaments, Tetris® has a few more interesting new modes. Move over Apex Legends and Fortnite, theres a new battle royale coming for that crown.

Fall Guy’s premise also has an instant appeal for Mediatonic its developers jokingly refer to it as a battle royale game they might not be terrible at. (Really, Tetris 99 doesn’t care whose day you ruin.) And at the end there can be only one survivor. Much like Tetris 99, Fall Guys’ simple controls and objectives are immediately accessible to a wider audience that may not be interested in the standard battle royale/shooter mix. You can target specific opponents with your junk rows, or anybody who’s close to going bust, or even just random people. If you complete two or more lines at a time, you’ll send junk rows over to one of your 98 opponents, cluttering up their field and driving them closer to the end. The game will be similar to Tetris 99 for the Nintendo Switch. Blocks fall from the sky, you can turn them and move them right and left as they fall, and the goal is to use those blocks to form unbroken lines at the bottom of the screen. Tetris Royale, the first game in the partnership between N3TWORK and The Tetris Company, will feature a 100-player battle royale mode. It plays just like the Tetris you know and remember (unless you’re my middle-school-aged nephews, who had absolutely no idea how to play Tetris when they were at my house on Thanksgiving). One of the biggest surprises of Nintendos recent Nintendo Direct presentation was the announcement of a Switch-exclusive, battle royale version of Tetris called Tetris 99.
Designed by Arika, and exclusively on the Switch, Tetris 99 turns the classic puzzler’s competitive multiplayer mode into a full-fledged battle royale game, with up to 99 different online players competing directly against each other.
Yesterday they released Tetris 99 for free for the Switch. Tetris 99 captures so many of the same feelings as a tense match of PUBG or a frantic firefight in and around a building. If you always thought Tetris would be better as a brutal war of attrition, pitting you against dozens of other players to see who can emerge from the block-strewn battlefield as the sole victor, well, Nintendo has good news for you. Tetris battle royale, as strange as it sounds on paper, was a good idea.
